Who?
One to One Thousand is A community interest company initiated by Russell Royer, an Honours, Ralph Knott Memorial Prize winner and RIBA Silver Medal nominee, during his 4th Year of architectural studies at the Architectural Association.
In his 2019 study of the top ten architecture firms, (AJ100 2019), Russell highlighted the misrepresentation of London in their visualisations. The presence of BAME people in these images did not match the demographic data for the project locations and showed a clear disregard for minority communities. Some indicated a complete erasure. To counteract these images, russell would edit visualisations, correcting the demographic to match census percentages.
In Autumn 2020 OneToOneThousand held a small-scale photo shoot in South West London, where Russell utilised his £800 ralph knott memorial prize money to fund the shoot, paying for the models’ time and for all of the necessary equipment.
russell continues to look for ways to expand this library and ensure all aspiring architects are equipped to produce truly representative visualisations.
